Our Pledge
In 2024 Karma Water announced their multi-year partnership with rePurpose Global, the world’s leading plastic action platform. Together, we're dedicated to tackling hard-to-recycle plastics and bolstering local plastic waste management infrastructure globally.
Our shared goal is to actively address the issue of low-value plastic waste, which often ends up being burned or dumped, ultimately polluting waterways and oceans.
To start we are specifically focusing on two impact project locations in India and Bali. Learn more about each site below.
Segara KErthi
Balinese: Sacred ocean
Location: Bali, Indonesia
Recovering plastic through this project protects Bali’s incredible natural ecosystems, creates entrepreneurship opportunities for local workers, and recycles plastic.
Bali, Indonesia is well known as a tropical island haven for travellers. Part of the Coral Triangle, Bali’s seas have some of highest biodiversity of marine species in the world. However, in recent years, rising levels of plastic waste – in part driven by tourism – has led to turtles and manta rays swimming amongst plastic bags, while Bali’s streams, mangroves and beaches are filling up with waste. Indonesia is one of the top contributors to ocean plastic in the world.
Our project works with small-scale waste collectors to recover ocean-bound plastic bags. The project trains local waste aggregators through an innovative franchise model, creating new income opportunities and safer working conditions.
Hara Kal
Hindi (हरा कल): Green Tomorrow
Location: Malappuram, Kerala, India.
This project protects the Keralan coast from plastic pollution by establishing a network of Material Recovery Facilities across the state.
Kerala is known as a tourist destination, with its mountainous terrain and Arabian Sea shoreline. The state is home to tea, coffee and spice plantations as well as an abundance of wildlife. Kerala is urbanizing rapidly, but over 50% of the population lives across hundreds of small villages. Formal waste management systems are practically non-existent due to limited resources and the remote nature of these areas, and plastic is usually burnt or dumped into the environment - eventually finding its way into the ocean.
Project Hara Kal mobilizes a local women's group participate in the project by funding training and employment, and increasing their earning opportunities. The project creates a brand new waste management supply chain that collects and ethically processes neglected low-value plastic that would otherwise have been destined for our oceans.
Karma's contributions help create infrastructure for sorting, segregating, and transporting plastic - including household collections that bring waste management services to around 100,000 households for the very first time.
